Amongst the most stunning scenery in New England, Millinocket and the nearby communities of East Millinocket and Medway provide a wide range of retail and businesses, services, recreational activities and excellent dining establishments for all to enjoy.
No matter what the season, you will find recreational activities to meet your needs. The Katahdin region is noted for its remarkable surroundings, vast assortment of streams, ponds, lakes and pristine forests that provide miles of exceptional wilderness trails not found elsewhere in Maine.
Mt. Katahdin and Baxter State Park
The park was the result of Percival P. Baxter's vision. Over 200,000 acres of mountains, lakes streams and forest were given in trust to the people of Maine. The Baxter Park Headquarters is located in Millinocket, approximately 25 miles from Baxter State Park.

The highest mountain in Maine, Mt. Katahdin is known to have attracted adventurers since the days of Henry Thoreau. Today, Baxter Peak is the final goal of the hikers on the Appalachian trail of their 2,100-mile journey. It is this journey from Georgia to Maine, which makes this destination the focus of Baxter State Park and Mt. Katahdin.
To appreciate what lies within the borders of Baxter State Park, the journey needs to be experienced first hand. Words will never capture the magnificent view of Mt. Katahdin or the unmatched beauty of wild life found within the confines of the Park. To feel true serenity, hike the trails, fish the ponds and enjoy the overnight stay at a campground... priceless! The Park is a haven for the explorer, photographer, naturalist, mountain climber or hiker.
